2021 Speech Day musical performances

One of the many casualties of COVID-19 has been Sydney Grammar School's Speech Day, traditionally held in Sydney Town Hall, renowned for its spectacular ornate features and heritage architecture. Speech Day this year was pre-recorded in Big School and in 2020 livestreamed from the John Vallance Hall.

For many, the highlight of Speech Day at the Sydney Town Hall is the playing of the world-renowned 1889 Grand Organ before and after the ceremony, in particular the annual playing of JS Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in d minor. The learning and performing of this piece is a much-anticipated goal for Grammar’s senior organists.

Blue Barlow (VI) and Hugo Hui (VI) were the appointed musicians for Speech Day 2021 and pre-recorded their excellent musical offerings in Big School for inclusion in the event.

Although understandably disappointed to miss the opportunity to play at Sydney Town Hall, Hugo and Blue were able to visit and record their music privately thanks to the hospitality of Sydney City Organist, Robert Ampt.
