On Wednesday 6 August we welcomed Old Sydneian, Dr Theodore Ell, to present an Ithaka Lecture to the School community.
Dr Ell shared his experience of learning how to write about a society as an outsider as well as insights from his recent memoir, Lebanon Days (2024), which recounts revolution, economic collapse, the experience of surviving the 2020 Beirut explosion. We were privileged to hear how Dr Ell’s passion for writing was sparked during his time at Grammar, and the precise use of language and deep capacity for empathy that his lecture displayed was an inspiration to all who were present to hear him speak.
