SGS St Ives Prep School Newsletter Vol 24, Number 33

Presentation Day will take place at College Street, again this year, in the John Vallance Hall on Tuesday 4 December, commencing at 1.30pm. This occasion provides an opportunity for the whole community to come together to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of the boys in 2018. The impressive venue can fortunately accommodate all of our boys, teachers, parents and friends.

Every boy in the School will take part with Preschool boys sitting in specially allocated seats with their parents. Various ensembles will perform and once again, a large scale choir will entertain the audience. The Headmaster of Sydney Grammar School, Dr Malpass, will present the prizes and the ceremony will also provide an opportunity for the community to farewell our Year 6 boys as they transition to a new chapter in their lives.

Mr Fraser will be sending home more detailed information in the coming weeks regarding meeting times for boys, ticketing and parking options.

Summer Holiday Instrument Hire

Summer Holiday Instrument Hire or Return

Your son’s hired instrument needs either to be hired for the holidays or returned after his final lesson or performance. Please pick up a holiday hire form from the Music Office and be sure to include your son’s instrument ID number in the space provided. The $30 holiday hire fee will be billed to your next account. Music tutors will also hand out copies during lessons. Boys in Year 6 or School Orchestra will need to return instruments to School on Wednesday 5 December for servicing. Please note that if returning a hired instrument, it must be left with a music staff member and NOT in the storeroom or elsewhere.

Music Lessons

Years 2-5 strings and band instrument try-outs 2.00-4.00pm Saturday 10 November in the School Hall

This opportunity is open to boys whose parents intend to enrol their son in music lessons through the School next year. Boys who would like to learn a brass, woodwind or string instrument with the aim of joining a band, orchestra or string ensemble, are invited to come along on Saturday 10 November. Our music tutors will be here to assess boys on clarinet, saxophone, flute, bassoon, cornet, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, violin, viola and cello.

Extra lessons

Some boys reach their 30 lesson annual total quite early in Term 4. If music tutors are able to offer extra lessons until Week 7, your son will bring home a form which needs to be returned immediately so that lessons can either be scheduled or stopped. Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Music Office.

Music lessons 2019

Application Forms are available from the Music Office and also from Reception for boys who would like to learn a musical instrument at School. Please read the Music Information section on the School website and return forms before the end of term.

Discontinuing Music lessons

If a boy is to discontinue music lessons at School, written or emailed notice to the Music Department must be received by Friday Week 5 of a term for lessons to cease at the end of that term. However, in Term 4, notice received by Friday Week 6 (23 November) is acceptable.

Year 4 boys participated in a cooking and language workshop with chef Luca last week. They made delicious crespelle dolci (an Italian style crêpe) con riduzione di lamponi e panna montata (fresh raspberry sauce and whipped cream) e con limone e zucchero (lemon and sugar). They learned new language and were given lots of tips from our chef as to cracking eggs, how to safely cook with a hot frying pan and how to flip the crespelle. Bravissimi! Luca explained the history behind this very simple and ancient dish and we also discussed the variety of both savoury and sweet fillings that can be used (such as crespelle alla fiorentina - a favourite dish of Caterina de’ Medici). The boys demonstrated terrific team work then enjoyed eating together. They have been given the recipe to prepare for the family at home. Buon appetito!
