In the April holidays, a group of twenty senior boys and three members of staff embarked on a six-day indigenous immersion with Red Earth.
The first couple of days were spent camping in the World Heritage Mungo National Park, north of Mildura. This is the home of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady, and the boys were able to explore the stories, history and traditions of the Barkindii, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngiyampaa people.
The second half of the journey was on country at Culpra Milli, south of Mildura. An introduction to the Culpra Milli began with a welcome to country. The smoking ceremony warded off bad spirits and provided safety for our stay. The boys made some meaningful connections with elders, Uncle Barry and Aunty Sophie, and they took part in crafting clapsticks and emu callers.
This was an excellent opportunity for boys to understand and appreciate the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures.
