During Weeks 3 and 4 of Term III, Form II pupils had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a cultural and culinary adventure — a Yum Cha experience in Sydney’s vibrant Chinatown.
Yum Cha, which means “drink tea” in Cantonese, is a cherished tradition originating from southern China. It involves sharing a variety of bite-sized dim sum dishes while enjoying Chinese tea, typically in the company of family or friends. This practice dates back to the Qing Dynasty, when teahouses served as social hubs for rest, conversation and eventually, food.
The excursion offered boys a firsthand glimpse into this rich tradition. Ivan Wang reflected on the experience, saying, “During our time at Yum Cha, we explored the wide variety of Chinese food and culture. In class, we’re now learning vocabulary and etiquette related to Chinese cuisine. The excursion really helped us understand the topic better!”
